Super Mario Brothers Wii – Review

Review – Super Mario Brothers Wii

Great design, great graphics, great fun. It’s great!

OK, I will admit that there is a tendancy for these games to follow a set, tried and tested, don’t wander off the path approach to game design. But I’ll tell you what, the old addage is true. If it ain’t broke …..

So, as you would expect, you have to get from location A to location B and along the way you have a few tricky moments. This is a good thing. Mario has also had a bit of a boost. He has two new power ups – he has an amazing Penguin suit (boy do I want one of these, come on Bill Gates, build something useful, build a Penguin suit) which allows Mario to chuck snowballs that will freeze opponents. Not only this, but it also makes him an amazing swimmer and is super grippy on ice. Then there is the helicopter suit. Shoot up into the air, hover and come back down again. It’s better than it sounds. All the old favourites are there too, such as fire-flowers and ice-flowers.

Something else you will notice is that the game is very challenging. It starts off nice and easy but quickly ramps up to sort men from the boys. I like the fact that it is challenging, though younger players may get bored if they can’t progress quickly. The level design is outstanding and you know that you are playing a game made by people who are masters of the art.

There is good replay value in the game as there are lots of secrets to find along the way, so there is something new each time you play. A handy feature is collecting coins – when you have enough coins, you can unlock movies which show you where the hidden areas are located. And after you complete the game, if you have enough coins, you can access the Super Secret Area! Don’t pretend you aren’t excited!

Controlling Mario is as you would expect. Hold the controller horizontally and use the buttons 1 and 2 to throw and jump. It works very well most of the time, but there are occasions when the complexity of what you are trying to achieve is hindered by the technology. It is only a small gripe though and wouldn’t put me off buying the game. The ability for 4 people to play at the same time is one of the best features of the game. Playing with friends is great fun and bouncing off each others characters never ceases to be both amusing and very annoying depending on which side of the sofa you are sitting.

Super Mario Bros Wii
is challenging and good fun on your own or with friends. And, you will want to play it again once you’ve finished it. I love it.

Score 9 / 10

New Super Mario Bros Wii Review : Not A Classic, But Still Fun

Written by Podunker: rrquinta

Heralded as the first 2-D Mario game to hit consoles in decades, and extensively advertised for its unique up-to-four-players-at-once gameplay, New Super Mario Bros Wii has a lot to live up to. If you consider all that came before, most notably the fantastic Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, Nintendo’s latest Mario game certainly has a lot of expectations for older fans especially. But how does this game measure up, either on its own or when compared to the legends of Nintendo’s past?

Platform: Nintendo Wii
Genre: Platformer
ESRB Rating: E
Release Date: 11/15/2009
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo EAD Tokyo

Overall Recommendation:

It’s definitely not Super Mario Bros 3 or even Super Mario World, but it’s still challenging and fun, if a bit lackluster overall. Definitely something every Wii owner should have in their library.

Story: 2/10

Who plays a traditional Mario platformer for the story? Basically, there is none, except that the princess gets kidnapped (yet again) by Bowser’s kids, and you and your pals must rescue her. That’s it. However, I don’t think it hurts the game at all, as it doesn’t really need a story. I loved the story in Super Paper Mario, but here I think it would probably have ended up silly (not in a good way) and artificial, so I think we’re better off without one.

Gameplay: 9/10 (single player), 5/10 (multiplayer)

Single Player

This is a great single-player game. I have to admit, when the game was first announced, I was worried that this would be one of those games with little or no value in the single-player campaign. Since I usually game alone, I was a little sad that I might miss out on a great Mario platformer. However, if anything, this game is a single-player game with a multiplayer mode added on.

If you’re familiar at all with other Mario games, then you know what to expect: tricky platforming combined with silly costumes and an entertaining experience. This game is a bit of a hybrid (in my opinion) of the two best traditional Mario games ever made: Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.

You get the costumes and item inventory from SMB3, and you get Yoshi, Ghost houses, and multiple exits for levels from SMW. I will also note that this game is very similar to the DS game New Super Mario Bros, but it improves on it in many ways, and is better, in my opinion.

Basically, power-up wise, you have some old favorites, like the red mushroom, fire flower and invincible star (and the mini mushroom from the DS version). You also have some new ones, like the propeller hat (that helps you “fly”), the ice flower and the penguin suit.

My favorite was definitely the penguin suit/ice flower. The only difference between them is that the penguin suit allows you to easily walk on ice, slide on your belly, and swim in water more efficiently. Both enable you to shoot ice (instead of fire), which will freeze your enemies. This leads to some interesting gameplay, as you can kill some enemies you normally could not (think the skeleton koopas), as well as creating platforms both in air and on water that enable you to reach places you otherwise could not.

Overall, the power ups help make the game a fun experience, although I have to say I really missed having a true flying ability the way you do with the Raccoon Suit or Feather from the previous games. Having the inventory was also nice to have back, but it was disappointing that you can’t have one item with you at all times (the way you could in SMB3, SMW, and NSMB-DS) to use when you need it.

Still, there’s plenty to do, with 8 worlds (none are locked initially like in the DS game, thankfully), plus a bonus world when you beat the game. It’s definitely a fun experience and one of the better singleplayer games for Wii.

Multiplayer

What about the highly advertised multiplayer, though, you ask? Well, as I mentioned in the single-player discussion, the game often feels like it was originally intended as a traditional solo experience and then Nintendo decided they needed a gimmick, so they added the multiplayer.

To be fair, the game does include several multiplayer-only minigames that are very fun, like a coin battle where you compete to see who can get the most coins by the end of the level. This mode includes some unique levels, which was nice, although I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t more of these, as you will spend most of the time playing through levels from the main game.

The main game, however, never really feels like it was intended four more than one player, let alone four. While playing with friends can be a blast, it can also be very, very frustrating, as level design is very unforgiving, especially once you add four people into the mix.

This might sound confusing to read, so I’ll try to explain. Basically, you will encounter a lot of situations where the standing room is only big enough to accommodate one, maybe two people at a time. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it actually means that you (and/or your friends) will die a lot because you knock each other into a pit or off a platform, simply because there isn’t room for everyone. This might seem like I’m being nit-picky, but it really is a flaw in the game, in my opinion, as it makes a lot of the game feel very hard in the “cheap” way.

The other problem, and this (in my opinion) was a major flaw in the multiplayer, was the inconsistency in killing players that fall behind. When playing with others, you have a limited area to stay together. The screen will zoom out a little to give you a bit more space, but if someone gets too far behind, they will be killed by being “cut off” from the rest of the group. This isn’t too bad in traditional, non-scrolling horizontal levels, especially once everyone learns to wait for each other. However, this becomes painful and down-right unfair when you get to the vertical levels (even if they don’t scroll). The reason: if one of you falls below the screen where the highest player is (highest as in farthest up in the vertical level), sometimes you will die, and sometimes you won’t and you can try to meet up. I found no rhyme or reason as to why you would sometimes die when you fell and sometimes you wouldn’t. No, this doesn’t have anything to do with falling into a pit or anything like this. It just seemed like a bug in the game, and one that made many of the levels (particularly a lot of the castles) almost impossible to play with four people.

Another, although more minor flaw I found in the multiplayer was the lack of powerups for all players involved. When you hit a block, yes, you will get enough total powerups for everyone playing (up to four if there are four players), but you will often only get 1 (maybe 2, if you have 4 people) of the “highest” power up. This might sound confusing, but basically what this often means is that one player will get the propeller hat or the penguin suit (for example), while everyone else only gets mushrooms. Considering the challenge of the game (especially in multiplayer), this is a huge design failure, at least in my opinion, albeit not as bad as the ones I mentioned previously.

Please don’t misunderstand me: the game can be a very fun multiplayer experience, even in the main game mode, and you do get the advantage of not dying as long as you have lives and at least one player is still alive, plus an infinite number of continues. However, the game is best played alone or with only one other friend, especially if you plan on playing to completion. For a fun diversion, however (especially for those of us who grew up playing the classic Mario games), it’s definitely entertaining. Hopefully Nintendo will improve on the multiplayer for future games (and considering the success of this one, I’m sure there will be).

Graphics & Sound: 7/10

The graphics are basically the same as the DS game, with obviously a bit of an upgrade to do the more powerful hardware available on the Wii. They aren’t bad, but they aren’t terrifically memorable either.

The one thing you will see is some interesting use of lighting (i.e., levels that are dark or only partially illuminated). This is not only interesting graphically, but makes for some fresh gameplay. The other thing you will see a lot of in this game is moving platforms (too much, in my opinion). This is fun and neat, but I almost felt like it was this new toy that the developers discovered and they over-used it. While it initially feels fresh and new, it gets kind of old pretty quick.

Same with the sound. I personally found the music a bit disappointing. While it wasn’t terrible, it felt a bit uncreative. I also preferred the phrase that Mario says at the end of each level in the DS game (“That’s-a-nice!”) more than the Wii version, but that could be personal taste.

Challenge: 10/10

This game is hard. The DS version was far too easy, so if you’ve played that and expect the same from the Wii version, prepare to be surprised. In some ways, the game is far harder than some of the classics, especially if you’re playing multiplayer.

Golden age of video arcade games
Aug 26th, 2010 by Deals Dave

Golden age of video arcade games

Overview

During the late 1970s, video arcade game technology had become sophisticated enough to offer good-quality graphics and sounds, but it was still fairly basic (realistic images and full motion video were not yet available, and only a few games used spoken voice) and so the success of a game had to rely on simple and fun gameplay. This emphasis on the gameplay is why many of these games continue to be enjoyed today despite having been vastly outdated by modern computing technology.

Business

The Golden Age was a time of great technical and design creativity in arcade games. Games were designed in a wide variety of genres while developers had to work within strict limits of available processor power and memory. The era also saw the rapid spread of video arcades across North America, Europe and Japan.

At this time, video arcade games started to appear in supermarkets, restaurants, liquor stores, gas stations and many other retail establishments looking for extra income. Popular games occasionally caused a crush of teenagers, eager to try the latest entertainment entry.[citation needed]

The two most successful arcade game companies of this era Namco (the Japanese company that created Pac-Man, Pole Position, and DigDug) and Atari (the company that introduced video games into arcades). These two companies wrestled for the number one and two slots in American arcades for several years. Other companies such as Sega (who later entered the home console market against 1980′s rival, Nintendo), Nintendo (whose mascot, Mario, was introduced in 1981′s Donkey Kong), Bally Midway Manufacturing Company (which was later purchased by Williams), Capcom, Cinematronics, Konami, Taito, Williams, and SNK.

Technology

Arcades catering to video games began to gain momentum in the late 1970s with games such as Gee Bee (1978) and Galaxian (1979) and became widespread in 1980 with Pac-Man, King and Balloon, Tank Battalion, and others. The central processing unit in these games allowed for more complexity than earlier discrete circuitry games such as Atari’s Pong (1972).

The Golden Age saw developers experimenting with new hardware, such as creating games with non-video technology such as vector displays, which produced crisp lines as opposed to raster displays. A few of these games became great hits, such as 1980′s Battlezone and Tempest and 1983′s Star Wars, all from Atari, but vector technology fell out of favor with arcade game companies due to the high cost of repairing vector displays (Vectrex, a home video game system with a built-in vector display, was released in 1982).

Developers also experimented with laserdisc players for delivering movie-quality animation. The first game to exploit this technology, 1983′s Dragon’s Lair from Cinematronics, was three years in the making. It was a sensation when it was released (and, in fact, the laserdisc players in many machines broke due to overuse), but the genre dwindled in popularity because the games were fairly linear and depended less on reflexes than on memorizing sequences of moves.

New controls cropped up in a few games, though, arguably, joysticks and buttons remained the favorites for most manufacturers. Atari introduced the trackball with 1978′s Football. Night Driver included a life-like steering wheel, Paperboy used a bicycle handlebar and Hogan’s Alley introduced tethered light guns to the arcade market. Other specialty controls, such as pedals in racing games and a crossbow-shaped light gun in Crossbow, also debuted in this era.

Gameplay

Galaga, a successful game of the Golden Age, borrows its theme from Galaxian and adds twists of its own.

With the enormous success of the early games, dozens of developers jumped into the development and manufacturing of video arcade games. Some simply copied the “invading alien hordes” idea of Space Invaders and turned out successful imitators like Galaxian, Galaga, and Gaplus, while others tried new concepts and defined new genres. Rapidly evolving hardware allowed new kinds of games which surpassed the shoot-em-up gameplay of the earliest games.

Games such as Donkey Kong and Qix introduced new types of games where skill and timing are more important than shooting as fast as possible. Other examples of innovative games are Atari Games’ Paperboy where the goal is to successfully deliver newspapers to customers, and Namco’s Phozon where the object is to duplicate a shape shown in the middle of the screen. The theme of Exidy’s Venture is dungeon exploration and treasure-gathering. One innovative game, Q*Bert, played upon the user’s sense of depth perception to deliver a novel experience.

Some games of this era were so popular that they entered the popular culture. The release of Pac-Man in 1980 caused such a sensation that it initiated what is now referred to as “Pac-Mania” (which later became the title of the last coin-operated game in the series, released in 1987). Released by Namco, the game featured a yellow, circle-shaped creature trying to eat dots through a maze while avoiding pursuing enemies. Though no-one could agree what the “hero” or enemies represented (sometimes they were referred to as ghosts, goblins or monsters), the game was extremely popular; there are anecdotes to the effect that some game owners had to empty the game’s coin bucket every hour in order to prevent the game’s coin mechanism from jamming from having too many coins in the receptacle. The game spawned an animated television series, numerous clones, Pac-Man-branded foods, and a hit pop song, Pac-Man Fever. Though many popular games quickly entered the lexicon of popular culture, most have since left, and Pac-Man is unusual in remaining a recognized term in pop culture, along with Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., and Frogger.

The enormous popularity of video arcade games also led to the very first video game strategy guides; these guides (rare to find today) discussed in detail the patterns and strategies of each game, including variations, to a degree that few guides seen since can match. “Turning the machine over” by making the score counter overflow and reset to zero was often the final challenge of a game for those who mastered it, and the last obstacle to getting the highest score.

The end of the era

The Golden Age cooled as copies of popular games began to saturate the arcades. Arcades remained commonplace through the early 1990s and there were still new genres being explored, but most new games were shooters, maze games, and other variations on old familiar themes.

New generations of home computers and home video game consoles also sapped interest from arcades. Earlier consoles, such as the Atari 2600 and Mattel’s Intellivision, were general-purpose and were meant to play a variety of games, and often could not measure up to video arcade game hardware, which was built for the singular purpose of providing a single game well. In fact, the glut of poor-quality home video game systems contributed in no small way to the video game crash of 1983.

But the debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985) began to level the playing field by providing a reasonably good video arcade experience at home. In the early to mid 1990s, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Mega Drive (Genesis in North America) greatly improved home play and some of the technology was even integrated into a few video arcade machines. By the time of the PlayStation (1995) and the Nintendo 64 (1996), both of which boasted true 3D graphics, many video game arcades across the country had gone out of business.[citation needed]

The video arcade game industry still exists today, but in a greatly reduced form. Video arcade game hardware is often based on home game consoles to facilitate porting a video arcade game to a home system; there are video arcade versions of Dreamcast (NAOMI, Atomiswave), PlayStation 2 (System 246), Nintendo GameCube (Triforce), and Microsoft Xbox (Chihiro) home consoles. Some arcades have survived by expanding into ticket-based prize redemption and more physical games with no home console equivalent, such as skee ball and whack-a-mole. Some genres, such as dancing and rhythm games (such as Dance Dance Revolution, part of the Bemani series) continue to be popular in arcades.

The relative simplicity yet solid gameplay of many of these early games has inspired a new generation of fans who can play them on mobile phones or with emulators such as MAME. Some classic arcade games are reappearing in commercial settings, such as Namco’s Ms. Pac-Man 20 Year Reunion / Galaga Class of 1981 two-in-one game, or integrated directly into controller hardware (joysticks) with replaceable flash drives storing game ROMs.

Legacy

The Golden Age of Video Arcade Games spawned numerous cultural icons and even gave some companies their identity. Elements from games such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, and Centipede are

The Fellowes Intellishred PS-79Ci is a personal desk side shredder with some interesting features and capabilities. Here we have compiled a list of some of the strengths and weaknesses of the PS-79Ci.

Strengths:

If there’s one thing we can’t stand, it’s paper jams, and the PS-79Ci appears to have eliminated them altogether. Their unique system features a gauge-like series of lights that allow the user to see how close to the machine’s capacity you are operating. If the light is green, you can add a more paper, if it’s yellow, you’re in the zone, and if it’s red you’ll have to remove some of the paper for the shred job to resume. The lights are bright and plain and easy to read. The PS-79Ci also seems to be able to power right through paper that is unevenly fed into the throat opening. When looking at shredders, we like to keep a special eye on safety features, and Fellowes seems to be leading the industry in that regard. Their innovative SafeSense system uses electronic sensors located at the fed opening slot that detect body heat and stop the machine immediately when hands and fingers are too close. It’s a pretty remarkable system that we tested numerous times, and were very impressed by. The shredder also ceases to operate when the waste bin is full or when the door to the bin is opened. The PS-79Ci shreds paper in a cross cut pattern, which is vastly superior and more secure than strip cut. In 2005 the feds enacted some regulations that mandate how certain types of information (mostly those that criminals can use for ID theft) be destroyed when it is discarded. The PS-79Ci is a level 3 security machine, meaning that it meets those guidelines. Frankly, we’re not sure why anyone would use anything but a cross-cut shredder like the PS-79Ci for their confidential documents. For a smaller desk side shredder, the PS-79Ci has a capacity and capabilities that are rather impressive indeed. We really liked, for example, that this machine could shred paper clips, staples and credit cards, but were truly impressed that the PS-79Ci could shred compact discs as well. Confidential information comes in a lot of forms these days, and its nice to see a personal shredder with the capability to destroy digital media. The PS-79Ci met its stated capacity of 12 sheets per pass with ease as well, though your results may vary depending on your power supply and type of paper you are shredding. The PS-79Ci has a lot of the “little things” we like to see in a shredder as well, such as: automatic on and off enabled by electronic sensors, nice quiet operation, and heavy duty casters.

Weaknesses:

1. The PS-79Ci is a great personal shredder, but you should keep in mind that it is meant to be used on an as-needed basis, and not for huge shredding jobs. This shredder can run for only about 10 or 12 continuous minutes before it will need a rest to prevent overheating.
